3 Skills Your Wedding Photographer Should Have

February 2, 2023

Weddings go by fast. You need to pivot and go with the flow, and make sure to never miss a moment. It’s important when booking a wedding photographer that they are skilled with making your vision come to life so I’ve put together a list of 3 skills your wedding photographer should have.

1. The Ability To Make You Feel Comfortable And Stress-Free

Most couples don’t realize this, but your photographer is going to be spending more time with you than you will with your family and friends. Most photographers are there right from the start of the day until the very end and it’s really important that they put you at ease so that you can enjoy the day.

Being patient and kind throughout the wedding day really does go a long way. It pays off both in the photographs and the overall feel of the day. If your photographer is being negative and stressing you out, the chances are you’ll see those emotions reflected back in the camera.

This is why it’s important to feel out your photographer first to make sure you connect well. Booking a time to meet or chat with them over the phone first will really help to see if they’re the wedding photographer for you.

2. They’re Willing To Work With You

Having a wedding photographer that is willing to work with you to create a seamless day is always a must. If they can help you craft your timeline for the day (trust me, we have a great understanding of how long certain things take and how much time to allot for them) it will make everything run smooth and stress-free.

And as every wedding day is unique, they should be able to work with you on any requests you have (as long as they are within reason 😉) or make suggestions to help create a beautiful experience.

3. They Can To Bring Your Vision To Life

As mentioned above, every wedding day is unique. When I am interviewing my couples it’s important that I get a feel for how they want the day to be captured. I even include this question in their initial contact form as well. Both the couple and the photographer should be on the same page so that you’ll have stunning images to look back on forever.

Make sure your wedding photographer has a portfolio and images that match the style you’re looking for. If you’re looking for something more posed, don’t hire a photographer that takes a photojournalistic approach to their images. If you want your images to be bright and airy, don’t hire a photographer that has dark and dramatic work.

Additionally, you can also request a more expansive portfolio of wedding work as well. Websites can easily get clogged up with images and be overwhelming, so most photographers keep things simple. I’ve had countless couples ask to see more samples so I always have a private gallery on hand to send out based on what they’re looking for.

So there you have it! Building a relationship with your wedding photographer is so important. We want you to have a great time and great images!
